Services CFD - POWER BOATS - Displacing and planing hulls performances prediction

Power boat free-surface with wave

For many years, while a lot of research was devoted to improve experimental and mathematical tools applicable to merchant and military ships design, little was done for smaller displacing, and most of the time planing, hulls.

Until the end of the 90', naval architects facing the design of a new boat without the possibility to take advantage of the towing tank, only had at disposal scarce systematic series and simple semi-empirical formula.

At the beginning of this decade things begin to change and some shipyards producing series boats understood that in an efficient production chain uncertainties in the hydrodynamic design of the hull couldn't be forgiven.

Caponnetto-Hueber have been the first to apply CFD to the design of production planing boats (see publications).
